Present

Present at the meeting were the four organisers :

  • Willem Visser
  • Michelle Kuttel
  • Albert Gazendam
  • Bruce Becker

Minutes

The general discussion of the meeting

Decisions taken during the meeting

During the meeting, it was decided :
  • that the event would consist of filtered technical contributions which could in principle be published in a journal.
  • that the event would be co-hosted with EPIKH
  • that the event would focus on "emerging technologies", to include the fields of "cloud" and "novel architectures (GPU, FPGA)

Preliminary Announcement

It was decided that as we had made most of the decisions, apart from the actual venue of the event, a preliminary announcement could be sent out to announce the dates and scope. The announcement would be posted on SAGrid's portal, internally at the CSIR, as well as perhaps on the CS departments of US and UCT websites. The announcement would take the rough form of :
  • it's an exciting time, and scaw is back
  • the theme this time round is emerging technologies
  • will be run in conjunction with EPIKH workshop
  • we want to hear from you who are active in the field
  • please register at indico and include your abstract if you want to give a presentation.
  • venue will be announced shortly, will be in Cape Town or

Audience

The announcement will be sent out to the following mailing lists:
  • chpc-announce[-all, -users, -announce, -s

Possible venues

There were several possible venues proposed and we need to follow up with details on the arrangements with each of them in order to decide where to run the workshop. Bearing in mind that the EPIKH workshop will be in the same place. A "lecture-style" venue is needed for the presentations, as opposed to a "lab-style" venue with workstations. Due to the fact that the EPIKH school (application-porting section) needs to run over at least 10 days, we need to have the school and the workshop in the same venue, but possibly in different rooms. This last is so that those developers who need an extra few hours can work without disturbing the attendees and vice versa.
