This is the topic which documents the discussion of a possible project to put digital public archives of video onto the grid.
Overview
This is just preliminary discusson, no project has yet started. The general idea is to work with an SME in the digital processing domain, to provide an online digital repository of museum video collections. The discussion initially will revolve around the division of labour, funding and access models, including back-end technologies and possible front-end portal technologies. Who will host the data and who will be allowed to access it, under which conditions are issues which are considered, but not finally or formally addressed yet.
Project outline and possibilities
In this section, we outline the possibilities around various modes of implementation of the project.
Data transfer and curation model
This section will deal with the long-term curation of the data, in digital format. In all scenarios, it is understood that the original format of the video remains the property of the museum itself and will continue to reside at the museum. Issues addressed are :
- who eventually owns the digital format of the data ?
- what redistribution rights are there to the data ?
- what access rights are to be applied to the digital format (all public, or identified researchers only ?)
Scenario 1 : Data is donated in digital format to public entity
In this scenario, the original format of the data is temporarily moved to a conversion facility, where the conversion from analogue to digital format is performed. Once the repository has been entirely converted to digital format, the digital repository is donated to the SAGrid federation for long-term curation and a contract is signed between the relevant entity (either individual museum or consortium - see below). This contract may be signed between the SAGrid federation as a whole, or by one of the members of the federation, as allowed by the Joint Research Unit constitution (

- specify relevant clause of the JRU document). The 3rd party which performs the conversion of the data from analogue to digital format retains now ownership of the data whatsoever; the ownership of the final product data in digital format is exclusively that of the relevant SAGrid entity (federation or site).
Scenario 2 : Data ownership is retained by museum, curated by SAGrid
This scenario entails a similar situation with regards to the 3rd party which performs the digital conversion, however full rights and ownership of the final product in digital format is entirely retained by the original owner (the museum, or consortium). However, the data is provided "on long loan" to the SAGrid federation or individual SAGrid site, for curation and hosting.
Scenario 3 : Data is released in a public CC license.
In this scenario, the final product is released as public-domain and licensed under a specific Creative Commons license. The ownership of the digital archive is retained by the museum itself, while rights for redistribution are covered by the CC license. SAGrid or the 3rd party can then use the archive or repository for either further commercial, academic or public exploitation.
Collaboration and consortium model
In this section, we discuss possible ways in which the project can be managed and models of cooperation between the providers of the various services :
- data providers
- providers of digital conversion services
- data hosting
- portal development and web services integration with grid back-end
etc.
Scenario 1 : A pilot phase experiment followed by consortium
In this scenario, a pilot phase is undertaken with the understanding that the work is done
pro-bono to produce a proof of concept. The minimum functionality is implemented at each level, with a lareg enough sample of donated data, to provide an idea of the possibilities of the project, should a large-scale implementation be considered. The project would consist entirely and exclusively of the prototype and would conclude with a demonstrator. The final contribution of the project would be the suggestion of the formation of a consortium of museums
Scenario 2 : Consortium of providers interacting with SAGrid federation
Scenario 3 : Consortium of providers interacting with individual SAGrid sites
Scenario 4 : Individual providers interacting with SAGrid federation
Scenario 5 Individual providers interacting with Individual sites on SAGrid
Funding Model
Scenario 1 : Public-Private partnership focussed on philanthropy
Scenario 2: Public-Privatee partnership for profit
Scenario 3 : Entirely Public funds
Scenario 4 : Entirely private funds, focussed on philanthropy

We should discuss the possibility for someone to attend and how to pay for it, if the project seems to be taking shape in the near future.
